Last month, the Florida GOP celebrated a registration lead of more than 500,000 voters statewide. Now the party is celebrating its 7th flipped county in just over two years.
he Sunshine State continues to turn red as another county saw its majority voter registration shift from Democrat to Republican on Friday.
Jefferson County now has 4,173 registered Republicans, compared to 4,166 registered Democrats. The rural North Florida county has a population of just over 14,500 residents – more than 9,600 of whom are registered to vote.
Florida GOP Chair Christian Ziegler and U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) took a victory lap on Friday after the county’s voter registration numbers were posted on the Jefferson County website.
“It’s another great day to be a Republican in the free State of Florida,” Ziegler wrote in a tweet. “Yesterday, 13 of Florida’s 67 counties had more Democrats than Republicans. Today, with Jefferson County flipping to Republican, Democrats now hold just 12 counties as they watch their party presence continue to dissolve.”
Ziegler also praised the work of local Jefferson County GOP and its chairman, Glen Bishop.
“Volunteers on the ground deserve the credit,” Ziegler wrote in response to one of his followers praising the chairman and his team. “They are crushing it.”
The Republican Party continues to gain momentum in Florida, which was long considered a “purple” state.
Governor Ron DeSantis’ historic election victory in November firmly established the Sunshine State as a Republican stronghold. Last month, the Florida GOP celebrated a registration lead of more than 500,000 voters statewide.
In April, Republicans successfully flipped Liberty County in Northwest Florida. And back in October, North Florida’s Hamilton County became the fifth GOP county to turn red in the past two years – joining Franklin, Pinellas, Hendry and Jackson counties.
